CHAPTER 11

Someone banging on Lane’s front door caused Lane to jolt from her bed. “LANE! WAKE UP! IT’S AN EMERGENCY!”

Lane leaped from her bed. She recognized the voice to belong to the desk clerk, Alyssa, and panic swept through her. Lane threw open the door. “God, is James okay?”

Alyssa seemed startled by Lane’s speed to the door. “Yes, uh, he’s fine.” She stammered. “You have to get to the dining hall fast! Hurry!”

“What’s going on?!” Lane demanded as she rushed back into the bedroom.

“I’ll explain everything on the way,” Alyssa called through the cottage.

Lane brushed her teeth as she threw on jeans and a t-shirt. She was pulling her hair back into a ponytail as she followed Alyssa out the door and into a park vehicle. She noted that Claire’s jeep was gone but was too concerned with the unknown situation at hand to dwell on it. “Is someone hurt? A guest?”

Lane was usually called out to remove a snake or some other type of wildlife from park facilities. She hoped that no one was harmed.

Alyssa only shook her head as she sped towards the dining hall. In a matter of seconds, she pulled the vehicle into a parking space and thrust it in park. “We have to get in there!” she said, jumping from the car.

Lane followed her quickly. “Why haven’t you told me anything? I kind of need to know what to expect here!” Lane yelled after Alyssa, who had already reached the door.

Alyssa waited for Lane to catch up, her hand on the door handle. “Just remember that this wasn’t my doing.” She swung the door open.

A chorus of “SURPRISE!” rang out.

Lane’s knees nearly buckled as relief washed over her. She glanced around and saw a few of the town’s local business owners with whom she worked closely. The majority of her co-workers were standing around sporting party hats. Some blew whistles and some pranked noisemakers. The dining hall had been decorated with streamers and a homemade banner that read Happy Birthday Ranger Chase. Next to a huge cake stood Jamerson, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. Lane was overwhelmed with gratitude. She had never had anyone care for her as Jamerson did, and he had unknowingly thrown Lane her first birthday party.

Lane made her way slowly across the room, stopping to say thank-you to everyone wishing her a happy birthday. She finally made it to Jamerson and fixed him with a scowl. “I’m guessing that you’re behind this.”

“Maybe. What happened to your eye?”

She hadn’t given much thought to the bruise that had formed underneath her left eye; she had been too caught up in the morning’s emergency. She tenderly touched her hand to the injury. “Long story, I’ll tell you later.” She pulled Jamerson into a hug. “Thank you, Jamerson. This really means a lot to me.”

Jamerson returned the hug. “You’re welcome, young’ un.”

“You scared the holy hell out of me!” she said, punching his arm half-heartedly.

“Hey, watch your mouth young’ un. There’s a lady present.” Jamerson pointed behind them, and Lane turned to see that Claire had joined them.
